About Installation

Messner Carpeting is installed by our highly trained, CRI-certified mechanics. Why is that important? Because an improperly installed carpet will not look as good or last as long, and may suffer from delamination, buckling, wrinkles, and other problems.

When your carpet arrives at our warehouse, we will call you to schedule a convenient date for installation. Once it has been installed, don't forget to register your installation with the manufacturer. Your Messner representative will provide you with a warranty application. Your warranty will include a toll-free number to call for cleaning instructions. Of course, if you have any questions about your carpet or installation, please call us!

PREPARATION:

Before your installers arrive, a few simple steps will ensure a smooth installation:

  • Entrances and hallways. Be sure that all doorways and halls are cleared of furniture, wall hangings, pictures, and breakables.
  • Furniture Remove all furniture from the rooms to be carpeted. Disconnect all electrical appliances, such as refrigerators and ranges. If you wish to have us move furniture or appliances, your Messner representative can arrange it for an additional charge. We cannot move sophisticated electrical equipment such as computers, stereos, or VCRs, nor can we disconnect or reconnect stove gas lines.
  • Closets and draperies. If carpet is to be installed in closets, clear them of all clothing. Also, hang or pin draperies four feet above the floor.
  • Existing carpet. We will help you pull up your existing carpet for an additional charge. Should you do this yourself, be sure to take the pad and staples out and leave the tackstrip in place for possible re-use.
  • Moldings, doors, and paint. Ranch baseboard and quarter-round moldings will need to be removed, and doors may need to be cut to accommodate your new carpet. While this is not within the scope of our work, we will be glad to recommend a professional to assist you. Although we'll be as careful as possible, we cannot be responsible for paint on baseboards, which may peel or scratch during carpet installation. If you'll be painting before your new carpet arrives, be sure to keep extra paint so you can touch up baseboards if necessary.
  • Seams. A seam may be required during the installation of carpet, depending on the size of the room. If possible, we will run the seam perpendicular to the windows to minimize the light reflecting off it. Seams DO show; some patterns more than others; a trained installer can minimize, but not eliminate this. Seams should be sealed with a bead of latex sealer along the cut edges to lock in the tufts and prevent their loss.
  • Clean-up. We believe that great service means taking care of the details. That's why we'll be happy to vacuum your carpet after installation. Please have your vacuum handy. We recommend that you store any unused larger pieces of your new carpet in a dry place for future use. We will be happy to move your existing carpet or vinyl flooring to your curb for disposal. Please make arrangements with your disposal company for pickup.

CUSHIONS:

The cushion under your carpet is extremely important. It helps the carpet retain its texture and appearance. Cushioning is sold by thickness and density. Too soft, and it will affect your carpet's performance; too thick, and the carpet will be difficult to anchor. What's more, failure to use a proper cushion may void your carpet's warranty. We recommend a cushion of no more than 7/16" thickness and no less than 1/4", with 6 pounds per cubic foot of density. For berber-style carpets, use a 3/8" thickness, also with 6 lb./ft³. Your Messner advisor can give you more specific information based on the type and intended location of your new carpet.
